Economic Outreach Programs

Three economic outreach programs are integral to the University's economic impact on New York State, which in 2002-2003 was over $865 million.

Small Business Development Center

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Binghamton, New York is one of 20 regional centers throughout the state. SBDC provides free management services and technical assistance to entrepreneurs and small business owners in the Southern Tier's seven-county region (Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga, Tompkins.) SBDC draws not only on the expertise of its own staff, but also from the resources of the SBDC Central Library and various federal, state and local government agencies.

Over the past three years, the SBDC has served 2,112 new clients, generated more than $26 million in economic impact and created or saved 1,545 jobs.

Trade Adjustment Assistance Center

A program for U.S. manufacturers to proactively respond to import competition, last year Binghamton’s NYS TAAC helped 27 firms to the tune of $1.9 million and 1,167 jobs. One of just 12 federally sponsored centers in the nation, NYS TAAC has contributed over $53 million to 1,100 firms since 1979.

The State University of New York at Binghamton administers one of 12 trade adjustment assistance centers throughout the nation. The TAAC at Binghamton serves small to medium-sized manufacturing companies throughout New York State. The trade adjustment assistance program equips U.S. manufacturers to proactively respond to import competition. For some businesses, imports represent a minor challenge - for others they pose a serious threat. Binghamton’s TAAC partners with manufacturers by offering 50/50 cost sharing of projects aimed at improving the firm's competitiveness. Specifically the funds are applied toward the cost of consultants, engineers or other outside professional help engaged on behalf of the firm to implement manufacturing, engineering, marketing, systems, quality or finance improvement projects.

Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence

The Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) is an industry support service offered by SUNY engineering schools at Binghamton, Buffalo and Stony Brook to strengthen New York state businesses by making them more competitive in today's rapidly changing and technology-dependent business environment. To accomplish its mission, Binghamton's SPIR Center assists small and mid-sized businesses through partnership projects staffed by Watson School Engineering and Computer Science students faculty plus client personnel. SPIR was initiated at Binghamton University's Watson School in 1994 with strong support from Governor and Legislature. An estimated $35 million in wages-per-year is generated by approximately 1400 jobs that SPIR has helped our partners create and retain.
