Ronald Miles teaches vibrations, dynamics and acoustics.
His primary research interest is in the development
of biologically inspired or biomimetic acoustic sensors.
Miles helped to discover a highly innovative mechanism
for directional hearing in the fly Ormia ochracea.
By using that tiny structure as a model, Miles is developing
for civilian and military applications the world's smallest
directional microphones. Miles work will be important
in any application in which a miniaturized microphone
and signal processing technology could improve the utility
and performance of a product. Besides the manufacture
of next-generation hearing aids, other envisioned civilian
applications include security devices, cell phones and
teleconferencing equipment.
