Abstract: Asthma results in avoidable ER visits and hospitalization, missed work/school days, and healthcare costs. Broome County asthma prevalence and ER visits per 10,000 > NYS exclusive of NYC (13/10.4, 28.2/27.3). Shortened primary care visits, appointment delays, and lack of access related to insurance leave minimal opportunity for asthma education. Campus-Community partnerships can improve community asthma outcomes. Nursing students, trained through ALA in asthma management, participated in a community-wide fair. Residents with asthma completed the Asthma Control Test (ACT) or the Child Asthma Control Test (CACT), and performed a peak flow reading. Evidence-based guideline asthma education was provided. 33 residents participated. 40% on ACT/CACT showed poor asthma control. Peak flow readings showed 30% in good control. 20% rated their asthma as well-controlled despite low peak flow readings. Researchers provided real-time asthma education based on specific asthma control. Campus-Community partnerships increase access to necessary asthma education and resources.
