Abstract: The identity of first-year college plays a strong role in shaping the academic decisions they make, influencing their ability to prioritize and utilize their time. Few studies have explored the correlation between identity including gender and personal values, with academic decision-making. This study aims to examine how the different factors of identity can shape the first-year educational course. This study will use a mixed methods approach leveraging student responses from surveys and interviews. The participants of the study are from a retention program focused on supporting students to overcome academic performance challenges and work towards achieving required academic standing. Quantitative data will be used to measure trends amongst the students, while qualitative data will be used to provide descriptive personal identity influences. Findings have suggested that students favored social engagement to be most beneficial to them when participating in the SOS Program. Making new friends and working in a group were the top listed for social engagement. Additionally, self-perception of their academic ability has been noted to play a significant role in decision-making. Findings suggest that many students rank themselves low when answering survey questions about their academic ability. Understanding and emphasizing how identity influences academic choices can lead to finding helpful solutions to design a more supportive system both academically and mentally for first-year college students.
