Abstract: This project aims to present information for the observation, research, and documentation of avian behavior within rescue environments. It aims to provide a comprehensive guide to managing birds during their adjustment period in rescue care. The project will touch on how to interact with birds in a way that is safe for both handler and bird, and how to build trust and a better relationship between both the bird and caregiver. This presentation will also explore effective strategies for introducing new birds into existing environments, taking account of factors such timing, method, and environmental considerations. Furthermore, it will address the importance of bird training, foster care, and its use for transitioning from a rescue to a home setting. It will also touch on helping prospective caregivers determine if their environment is suitable for a bird. The presentation combines insights from research, personal experience, and avian rescue best practices to provide valuable tools for anyone working with or caring for rescue birds. While research within a foster care system is limited, this presentation will also use information from observations through multiple video platforms to touch on behavior changes from a more stressed environment in a rescue to a quieter home environment. The project aims to present information in an interactive “If Yes then, If No then” flow chart to make research more straightforward to follow for the audience.
