Abstract: Our studio focuses on designing spaces that bring people together in urban and rural settings. By blending architectural theory, practical technology, and planning principles, we create solutions that are both innovative and rooted in the needs of the community. With a county population of around 46,000 and Cuba’s population of 1,800, this area faces challenges typical of small towns, like a declining population and limited economic opportunities, While, boasting significant potential with its rich history, strong sense of community, and natural beauty. By revitalizing Cuba, we contribute to the greater vitality of Allegany County. The studio of over thirty students were divided into eight groups focusing on different areas and aspects of the village to accomplish goals such as reimagining, and restoring Cuba. The class analyzed Cuba’s comprehensive plan, and visited the town twice to gain the whole scope of the project and opportunities Cuba has. The class then had design charrettes, a precedent interim presentation to Cuba residents and officials to gain feedback for the direction for the project. The studio then presented a pre-final presentation to county officials, before presenting the final presentation in Cuba, NY on October 24th, 2024. Selected students then presented the project in Washington D.C. to further promote the work within the region. Designs for this community revitalization range from new construction buildings, historic preservation projects, parks, trails and streetscapes will be reviewed by the Village of Cuba Planning Board to update their Comprehensive Plan.
