Abstract: This research aims to explore the potential of oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) as a natural control for invasive crab species threatening Long Island’s shellfish beds and marine ecosystems. Specifically, the study investigates whether oyster toadfish can reduce populations of the European green crab (Carcinus maenas) and the Asian shore crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus), two invasive species that prey on native shellfish and disrupt local biodiversity. Through both field and laboratory experiments, we will examine oyster toadfish feeding behaviors, preferences, and predation rates on these invasive crabs. By assessing how effectively oyster toadfish can lower crab populations, the study aims to evaluate their role in restoring ecological balance and supporting fisheries. If successful, this research could provide a sustainable biological control method to manage invasive species and protect vulnerable marine habitats. The findings may offer insights applicable to other regions facing similar invasive species challenges.
