Abstract: This research project focuses on Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in seven freshwater ponds located in the Town of Southampton. This is important because it raises awareness and equips locals with practical knowledge about the HABs. Weekly sampling and analysis for cyanobacteria identification and toxicity were conducted with support from Dr. Christopher Gobler's lab, and LI Analytical Labs, Inc. Nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from residential wastewater systems and lawn fertilizers are major contributors to HABs, as well as increased global temperatures. This study encourages sustainable ways to address this ecological issue by raising awareness and understanding of HABs.
