Abstract: Our research team is establishing a foundation for EEG research in the Psychology Department at Farmingdale State College. The department has not conducted EEG research in many years, and no established protocol existed for training or data collection. To address this gap, we are developing a standardized step-by-step guide for research assistants using the Enobio-20 EEG system with iMotions software. This protocol will provide students with hands-on experience in EEG methodology, improving accessibility to neuroscience research. Through hands-on training, we have refined best practices in electrode cap placement, signal optimization, and data recording. A key challenge we encountered was determining the correct amount of gel needed to ensure strong signal quality, as insufficient gel led to poor data collection. We also observed that different hair types affected electrode contact, highlighting a need for future EEG systems with more inclusive designs. Additionally, repeated practice sessions allowed us to refine our techniques and significantly improve the timing and efficiency of the setup process. This protocol will serve as a foundational resource for future EEG studies within our department, including research on how brief meditation sessions may induce EEG changes linked to shifts in growth mindset beliefs. By establishing a reliable framework, we are expanding research opportunities in psychology and neuroscience at our institution.
