Abstract: In this paper, I will explore the variety of Museum Studies opportunities offered to undergraduate students within their institutions as well as in public museums. I will also examine how academic programs such as coursework, internships and work-study positions provide hands-on experiences of museum practices. Using my own experiences as a case study, I will analyze how, through these opportunities, I’ve been able to collaborate with artists, curators and my peers. I gained first-hand experience on exhibition management, curatorial work and community engagement, which prepared me for future career opportunities in the arts sector, stimulating my academic and professional growth. Through personal reflection, I will explore New Museology, which encourages a reimagined museum model of visitor engagement and the development of creating lasting relationships between a museum and its visitors. My aim for this paper is to highlight the importance of offering Museum Studies exposure to students at a collegiate level. Gaining knowledge in a museum or gallery setting will prepare them for successful entry into the workforce, making them competitive for positions they wish to apply for. Currently, I am furthering my research, summarizing my experiences, and developing a poster which will include my significant findings on the subject.
