Abstract: Postpartum depression (PPD), a prevalent and persistent depressive disorder, significantly impairs parental caregiving, affecting approximately 15% of new parents. This study investigates the complex interplay of systemic factors contributing to PPD among women in the United States, with a focused analysis of New York State and New York City. Employing a mixed-methods approach, including a comprehensive review of peer-reviewed literature and statistical analysis of relevant datasets, this research identifies critical systemic contributors: fragmented healthcare access, including limited mental health integration; socioeconomic disparities, encompassing financial instability and resource scarcity; inadequate social support infrastructure, characterized by a lack of community resources and familial support; and restrictive societal expectations, including unrealistic parenting norms and stigma surrounding mental health. The findings underscore the necessity of targeted policy interventions and comprehensive healthcare system reforms to mitigate the impact of these multifaceted systemic factors and ultimately reduce the prevalence of PPD.
