Abstract: Genetic cancer testing can identify individuals at increased risk for cancer. Testing remains underutilized in many health settings, including gynecology. This project explored factors influencing women’s decisions to accept or decline genetic cancer testing. A descriptive project was conducted in a women’s health clinic. Women aged 18–65 who participated in a provider-led discussion on hereditary cancer genetic testing were invited to complete a brief post-visit telephone survey. The survey assessed patient perceptions of the visit discussion, informational adequacy, and factors influencing their genetic testing decisions. Participants self-reported whether they had accepted, declined, or were undecided about genetic cancer testing. Reported facilitators reflected perceived relevance and interest in preventive health; barriers included cost, uncertainty about necessity, and logistical factors. These findings suggest that decisions about genetic testing may be influenced by information provided by providers, in addition to other barriers. Findings also provide future study opportunities.
