Abstract: Stuttering is a neurological disorder that affects not only speech, but how many people are perceived in a social and work setting. Many fluent speakers hold a stigma against those who stutter and often believe that they are nervous, shy or less capable. The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between a person’s education on stuttering and the advice they give to people who stutter (PWS). The research examined this correlation by asking a series of questions before and after receiving a brief education intervention including basic facts/myths and advice they would give. The findings suggest that educating the public about stuttering can overall increase awareness for the PWS community. Increasing public awareness and encouraging patience and empathy in conversations can help create a more inclusive environment for those who stutter.
