Abstract: Performance training often prioritizes technical perfection and control. However, moments of imperfection and vulnerability often create deeper connections between the performer and the art, as well as the art and the receiver. This project explores the power of physical imperfection in movement as it enhances authenticity, expression, and truthfulness. It analyzes the body as an instrument for truth rather than a purely technical tool, inviting viewers to consider the aids of imperfect physicality. This pushes them to consider how they can apply these deviations from perfection in their own work, regardless of their practice. My research is heavily informed by the following artists: MeganAnna Griffin, who explores authentic, human movement rather than idealized technique; Uta Hagen, who developed the idea of living truthfully under imaginary circumstances; and Molly Long, who prioritizes emotional commitment in her pieces. The work will culminate in a dance performance with deliberate imperfection and vulnerability.
