Abstract: The partisan reproductive atmosphere surrounding women's access to abortion technologies in New York prior to the 1970 abortion reform bill was complex. This research project examines Warren M. Anderson, the former New York Senate Republican Majority Leader from Binghamton, and the extent to which his legal career shaped the state's decision to legalize abortions. In addition, it will contextualize the classification of abortion information as “obscene,” restricting the distribution of said materials. Anderson's impact in legislative reform can be found in newspaper archives where he endorses the legality of abortion and resists regulations over abortions requiring husband approval, which other republican politicians at the time supported. Utilizing this local lens, Anderson's legislative actions and advocacy show the significant extent to which he influenced the states transition to increased reproductive autonomy despite being the Majority leader of a party traditionally opposed to these initiatives.
