Abstract: This project explores developing a mode of meditation that utilizes the craft and process of painting with watercolors. Inspired by Namita Kulkarni and her watercolor florals as a form of meditation, Jean Haine’s film on using watercolor as a mode for deeper thought, and even Bob Ross’ approach to painting, this project unifies meditation and watercolor. Rather than using painting as a new form of meditation, watercolor is used to lift and enhance the practice of traditional meditation. In this mode, brush strokes work with breath work, and water flows with thought patterns, helping participants concentrate fully by committing both their brain and body. By practicing not just with a still body and still mind, but a working hand and still thought, this meditation form offers deeper connection to mindfulness – especially to kinesthetic learners – and to those who have trouble with the traditional stillness of meditation.
