Abstract: Nationally, 2.7% children 0-4 years have asthma, increasing to 7.4% among school-aged children, suggesting children may be undiagnosed. An asthma risk assessment conducted at local HeadStarts revealed 11% of enrolled children with asthma and 11% at high risk, exceeding national averages and highlighting a significant community health disparity. A community engaged partnership addressed asthma risk in Head Start. Undergraduate students trained in asthma management implemented a video to help children and classroom staff in Head Start understand asthma. 237 preschoolers ages 3-5 participated in the activity. Children were able to recite the asthma management steps from the video: sit down, relax, and get an adult. Increasing awareness of signs and symptoms of asthma allows for early identification and intervention for the child at risk. Referrals can be implemented to assure medical treatment is available, reducing the potential adverse outcomes associated with undiagnosed or uncontrolled asthma.
