Abstract: This project explores maximalist fashion as a form of personal and creative expression, focusing on how individuals challenge societal expectations through style. Fashion is often shaped by social norms that promote simplicity, restraint, and the avoidance of what is labeled as “too much” (Kaiser, 1997). While well-known designers have historically challenged these expectations, this project also focuses on everyday creators and digital influencers who express themselves outside traditional industry standards. Creators such as Wisdom Kaye, along with DIY fashion artists, show how bold styling, layering, and unconventional combinations can communicate identity while resisting mainstream ideas of “acceptable” fashion. By comparing assumptions with personal meaning, the installation encourages viewers to reconsider how quickly fashion is judged and to recognize maximalist style as a meaningful form of self-expression. Ultimately, the project argues that clothing is not only a visual presentation but also a powerful medium for creativity, identity, and storytelling.
