Abstract: Flash fiction is fiction writing no longer than 1,000 words, or about 3 pages of 12-point Times New Roman double-spaced font. The form seems deceptively easy, as it is often a challenge for writers of any experience level to tell a complete and emotionally impactful story in such a short space. The Intermediate Fiction Workshop class taught by Professor Heather Humphrey features two flash fiction assignments, designed to get students out of their comfort zones and into the minds of their characters quickly, yet with considerable care for word choice and pacing of a compact story. This poster details a flash fiction story—written for the class—titled “Nighttime in No-Place” in which a lonely young man thinks back on his past.
