Abstract: Globally, authoritarian regimes are becoming frighteningly common. Paired with the use of advanced technology, new ways to oppress a population invent themselves constantly. Surveillance capabilities have improved to dystopian levels especially in Xi Jinping’s China, which begs the question of whether or not extremely advanced surveillance technologies will see themselves implemented on a wider scale. In addition to surveillance, existing platforms like social media also pose potential threats to the privacy of any person who finds themselves agreeing to the terms and service provided by the company running the platform. This study serves to analyze threats to individual freedoms posed by advancements in technology. Through the analysis of how current authoritarian regimes utilize technology, this study determines how technology is used to maintain control and if these methods are becoming more widespread. In tandem with existing literature, this piece will focus on the new dangers brought about by technological authoritarianism.
