Abstract: The volume of student waste, including recyclables, is a strain to campus resources and undermines sustainability goals if not managed effectively. Contamination of recyclables by non-recyclables is a particular problem. This study analyzes spatial distributions of recycling practices at Binghamton University, New York. The focus is on recycling generation and contamination in recycling bins. The goal is to better understand how bin location, user behavior and other factors influence the effectiveness of campus recycling programs. The data utilized in this study was collected by student recycling assistants and was obtained for the 2023-2024 academic year. Utilizing GIS and statistical methods, this data has been mapped and spatially analyzed revealing recycling contamination hot spots and identifying causes of the trends. While focused on recycling contamination and causes at Binghamton University, this case study has broader application for improving recycling efforts at other college campuses facing similar waste management problems.
