Abstract: During the 1990’s, a series of ethno-religious conflicts erupted in the former Yugoslavia that led to its breakup. One was the Bosnian War where Muslim Bosnians fled the country due to persecution. A popular destination was Utica, NY, where they would thrive and establish themselves. Through archival and ethnographic research about the Bosnian community in Utica, this research examines their adaptation to Utica and the transition of their livelihoods over time. It reports data on Utican-Bosnian diasporic experiences, especially to those born in Bosnia who still remain in Utica. It finds the refugee center and local community serving an influential role in their resettlement. Bosnian refugees have kept their culture alive through educating their American-born children about the Bosnian language and traditions. The majority have visited Bosnia since their initial departure. The research highlights the revitalization of Utica due to immigration, aiming to reduce prejudice against immigrants.
